Italy’s Other South

by MAG Travel in Italy, Travel

Basilicata is the instep of the Italian boot. This hilly and mountainous region is located in the southwest corner of Italy on the Ionian Sea. Parts of Bascilicata have been settled since the Stone Age. It was conquered by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Normans. In Melfi you can find some of the most spectacular castles perched on green hills, still dominating after thousands of years.  When the pirates came, the local inhabitants were forced to flee into the interior. Historically the region is quite poor. Its population is slightly more than 600 thousand. Many still work at the FIAT factor near Potenza, and 70% of the agriculture is from vineyard production but only 3% is DOC- mostly Aglianico del Vulture, a light red served with caciocavallo cheese and spelt pasta.
