Dan- American Express – “impressed”

Michelle:

I have been in the business for over 20 years and pride myself in quality staff and service. I was visiting Italy before you were born. That said, I gave you the chance to show me what you were made of, and as Hafid said, “sei forte” – you’re the best. I was very impressed with your background and ‘lauch’ on your own after the Corporate sector lifestyle. You are truly talented to scout out the unknown and special, even to a seasoned traveler like myself. Your food knowledge and PASSION shines through in ever location recommended. If you treat every client like you treated me,or rather...

Amalfitana Gastronomic Alphabet

Amalfitana Gastronomic Alphabet

I am taking a Masters course and for the life of me I still cannot get over the wretched name “Storia e Cultura delle Tradizioni Gastronomiche” – History and Culture of Gastronomic Traditions. Sounds properly academic and Julia Childs-esque, but it’s that gastro part that disturbs me. Like Colonoscopies and the such.

Nevertheless, I am supposed to be writing my thesis and came across this wonder Amalfitana Alphabet of the Gastronomic delights it boasts.

As a tribute to the place that ignited my fire and where, for the last 10 years, I’ve called home away from home, despite the long bo...

A week of gluttony

HI, Michelle –
Bill and I are recuperating from our week of fun and gluttony in Rome. We had a wonderful time, thanks in no small measure to you. I could not have found a more comfortable hotel myself nor one in a more optimal location. We returned Wednesday to the restaurant/deli you recommended for our first night’s dinner because we had such fond memories of our meal.

Our transfers were very smooth. The driver was on time and we had a most com...

The Moroccan Hammam

The Moroccan Hammam

Morocco is like the original hippy colony. Hippies but with thousands of years of tradition and culture and religion.Everything is done in accordance with tradition and culture; slowly, rehearsed daily, without questioning why or how.

This always boggles me, mono-cultures. Having come from a multi-cultural city in the most multi-cultural state in the melting pot of cultures, I never experienced this before: there is one way to do it, and we all say it’s the best way! Italy is like this in many ways: cooking, eating, recipe wars going back centuries which are still being argued right now at a trattoria near you. It&...

Sea, sun and endless summer in Puglia

Sea, sun and endless summer in Puglia

A seaside vacation in Puglia? In this sunny, sea-lapped region of Italy holiday makers are simply spoilt for choice. Our journey commences in Northern Puglia from the Gargano, an immense promontory where the sea, sun, and lush Mediterranean vegetation happily co-exist. The hairpin bends typical of the Gargano make the promontory a favo...

Trial by Canning

Trial by Canning

We are inundated with tomatoes. This is a new experience for me. After planting 3 different kinds I still can’t believe how many sweet and tasty pomodori we have! I’ve never canned for preservation before. After a week of research and questioning people wiser than me, I realized that canning is perfected by trial and error. The first batch at canning took me 6 hours. The second took me 3. Canning is a project in which you truly understand that everything dies. You learn the age old process of cheating death – at least until winter. The thing is, cheating of death by preservation is to realize that death will occur and...

Maroc’s Souks.

Maroc’s Souks.

Moroccan décor and riads were more or less closed books to designers, writers, artists and gourmets until the country came under French influence in the late 19th century. Anyone interested in Arabic and Middle Eastern culture and artefacts looked instead to Egypt, Turkey or the Lebanon. But just before World War I, Morocco became the ‘in’ place for those in search of fresh ideas, and not just because getting there across the Straits of Gibraltar was a comparatively simple matter.

Santa Maria Capua Vetere

Santa Maria Capua Vetere

A beautiful idealic town in the province of Caserta- where Spartacus was trained at the Gladiator school (ludus) here in what was then known as Capua is now known as one of the most dangerous mafia regions in Italy. We went down to meet with locals to discuss food, politics and how English as a second language is saving force. Believe it or not, no one sees them. Forget Sopranos, this is the “Gomorrah” – the mafia located in the Campania region who control the region since – as they put it – no one else takes care of them. The don’t bother you or me, they are infiltrated in the government, the infrast...
